City Initiatives

The City of Palm Bay provides its residents and businesses with opportunities to enhance the quality of their lives while living and working in an affordable and safe environment. One of its ultimate goals, “sustainable growth” is an inherent characteristic of Palm Bay as stated in its motto, “A Perfect Place to Grow.” In an effort to build good places for people to live and to be good environmental stewards, Palm Bay is inspired to be a sustainable community and to lead by example.

Here are some highlights of City sustainable initiatives:

City of Palm Bay - Sanitation Program

Beginning in October 2010, the City of Palm Bay transitioned to the new sanitation program which offers collection of both household waste and recycling one day a week. By scheduling solid waste collection once weekly, the City strives to reduce our carbon footprint while progressively working towards the performance measures mandated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The Energy, Climate Change and Economic Security Act of 2008 established a new statewide recycling goal of 75% by 2020. FDEP reported in 2010 that Floridians collectively recycle 28% of their solid waste. Additionally in FDEP’s report to the Legislature, it was noted in that in 2007 “more than 32 million tons of municipal solid waste was generated in Florida. To visualize this amount, imagine a four-lane highway of solid waste three feet deep extending from Tallahassee to Seattle, Washington- and back” (Florida Department of Environmental Protection).

Roughly 38,000 residences as well as the City’s facilities utilize the single stream recycling method in City issued carts as part of the Waste Management contract. This method promotes sustainable best practices by making the recycling process easier for customers to participate. Items that used to be thrown away now have the chance to be reused and revitalized. By going single-stream, we are able to recycle up to three times as many recyclable materials as in the past. By 2013, Waste Management will offer a recycling program which awards customers for the amount of waste that they recycle. Further updates will be provided as the program develops. Additionally, Palm Bay’s Parks and City Hall are equipped with solar powered recycling compactors provided by Waste Management.
